Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) said, “Allah said, ‘All the deeds of Adam’s sons (people) are for them, except fasting which is for Me, and I will give the reward for it.’ Fasting is a shield or protection from the fire and from committing sins. If one of you is fasting, he should avoid sexual relation with his wife and quarreling, and if somebody should fight or quarrel with him, he should say, ‘I am fasting.’ By Him in Whose Hands my soul is’ The unpleasant smell coming out from the mouth of a fasting person is better in the sight of Allah than the smell of musk. There are two pleasures for the fasting person, one at the time of breaking his fast, and the other at the time when he will meet his Lord; then he will be pleased because of his fasting.”

Sahih Bukhari.

Hana/Samie’s old HP printer that regularly gave me fits decided to stop feeding paper properly just as Hana was about to print out her final paper for class last week, so I ordered up a new printer for us.

As mentioned before, I have some trouble remaining patient with technology and other human-made stuff (mostly electronics, but sometimes other things too). And it ends up that 1) printing over the network only works when the computer you’re printing from and the computer you’re printing too are on precisely the same network, and 2) for some reason a 2012 MacBook Pro running Yosemite will pull the CUPS driver directly from the connected mac (a 2009 mini running Maverics), but a 2009 MacBook Pro (13″) won’t, and will only successfully print with the Generic PostScript driver.

1) this seems rather obvious in hindsight… Samie recently acquired a router that we’re using to expand the network a bit: it’s plugged into the main router, and broadcasts a couple of extra networks to (theoretically) help even out the bandwidth some (I’ve seen no evidence that it actually does, in fact, if anything, up- and download performance is slightly worse over the secondary networks).

Anyway.

The 2012 MacBook Pro was connected to one of these networks, and it could see the printer just fine, but refused to print to it until I connected to the same network that the mini lives on. But once that happened, 2) it read the driver from the mini (or pulled it from the internet) and printing works fine, with all the extra bells and whistles.

The 2009 MacBook Pro was connected already to the same network, but refused to pull the drivers from the mini or the internets, and after feeling my anger rising, I remembered part of the above hadith, by the grace of God, and was able to largely avoid the throwing stuff and banging around that usually goes on.

Unhappily, I only found all this out through much trial and error (and much “I’m fasting. I’m fasting.”) over about 2 hours.

Alhamdu lillahi Rabbil ‘alamin. And may Allah azza wa jall grant me patience with technology and with coworkers who don’t follow clearly written, demonstrated, and long-standing instructions. Amin.
