After a day of Jury Duty back in November 2013, during which I and 11 of my fellow citizens performed our civic duty, it seemed like a good idea to try out a photo app, sorta…

Enter Diana app, a sorta fun, sorta random little app from Stettiner Games and More.

Shake your phone, and Diana pulls two pictures at random, crops them square, creates a multiple-exposure-type effect, and applies one of 12 filters. Some of the filters are a bit gaudy, but with the right pictures, they can work (most of them, anyway).

You can choose your own pictures, or take your own pictures, and you can select which filter to use, but the filters and the multiple exposure effect is all performed in-app, with no ability to modify settings. You can, however, change the resulting image slightly by swapping order of the input images.

Some may bemoan this lack of customizability, and there are a couple of instances where I would’ve liked to be able to do a bit of masking, or perhaps make some opacity adjustments, but I like the constraints, and plan to spend more time with this app in the future.

For more, and to see what others are doing, check out the #dianaphotoapp tag on Instagram or visit Diana’s facebook page.

At $.99, it’s cheap, and fun enough. And if 99 cents is too much, there’s a free version (it removes some filters and adds a watermark). That said, there is one small problem…

The original version limited resolution to a paltry 612 x 612, suitable for Instagram and Facebook, but not for much else. The most recent version as of this writing offers resolution of 1536 x 1536: better, but I’d still like to see full resolution.

I was curious to see how this app worked, so I created a some tests, and put the results into a pdf. If you’re interested, you can download it here.

So that’s about it. I give Diana a thumb and a half, or maybe 3.8 stars, or, I don’t know… maybe I could come up with a rating system for these reviews, and maybe I will, if I do enough reviews to warrant a rating system that is…

Thanks for reading, and if you have any questions, I’ll try to answer them!
