Some weeks ago, I submitted a photo of unfolded interior of a gallon-sized fishy cracker container and claimed that I would be making an on-camera macro flash diffuser out of it. This would be 365-95, if you’d like to reminisce.

Well, fast forward 57 days and guess where that former fishy-cracker container has been for all this time…

So I decided to spend a couple of hours doing what I said I was going to do, sort of.

5 or 6 hours and ~400 shots later, here we are.

So I used the Light Pipe I made earlier today to create a Beauty Dish-ish type of thing. The fresh (and really bad) haircut didn’t do me any favors here, but this was really more of a proof-of-concept project than anything else.

I didn’t take any in process shots. Apologies. But I just cut a hole in the bottom of a roasting pan, shoved the light pipe through, attached it with gaff tape, and stuck a hastily-folded hunk of aluminum foil to the end of it to bounce light back into the pan. It makes really beautiful light, but it chews that light like crazy (and swallows about 75%) before spitting some beauty at the subject. D7000, 50mm 1.8 – ISO 100, f/ 1.8, 1/160. Lit with minimal ambient light and my new toy, a hacked-together soft box-type-thing. Fun times.

Had I turned my head a bit more, or had the box aimed more at my face, I would’ve gotten some nice reflections in my glasses. This is something to keep in mind for future uses of this flimsy, poorly-constructed, but very pretty little lightbox.

5 days, and the moustache is coming in as expected. In another week, it’ll look pretty juvenile, but by Thanksgiving it should be somewhat respectable, assuming my move to vegetarianism hasn’t changed how fast my hair grows.

I missed the third… For shame. I’ll try to be more consistent, but make no promises. Enjoy!
